Mental Health…. is not a destination, but a process that takes time and attention. The World Health Organization (WHO) just held their annual world mental health day “Make Mental Health & Well-Being for ALL a Global Priority.” This is an opportunity for people with mental health conditions, advocates, government, employers, employees and other stakeholders to come together to recognize the work that needs to be done placing mental health at the TOP PRIORITY! At LiveWell: The Healing Community, caring for your mental health is indeed one of our top priorities.
People everywhere face conflicts and crises every day - from within the walls of our own homes, to across nations. And the tolls of these situations are felt not only in our physical circumstances, but also in our mental health and well-being.
Isolation, frustration, overwhelming anger, depression, addiction and the destruction of relationships within families and communities are the fallout of having no way to address the breakdown of mental wellbeing. This is one of the reasons that LiveWELL was created to be the safe space for people to come together and share these kinds of experiences and begin to HEAL in CommUNITY.
It's been such an honor to see this community unfold through similar shared experiences. Conversations just naturally flow with depth and meaning as if everyone who walks through the doors of our healing space have known each other before. A beautiful connection of souls that are ready and able to hold space for one another's well being.
Mental health is essential to living a balanced life and just as important as tending to physical health. We are not separate beings rather ONE interconnected Mind, Body & Soul and when the mind isn’t functioning at its highest level, then the rest of our being is imbalanced.
Mental Health encompasses our psychological, emotional and social well-being and affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. If you start to feel like your emotional and mental health is starting to impact you, it may be time to reach out for guidance or try one or all six of these mind/body remedies at home whenever you need support.
1. PRACTICE GROUNDING TECHNIQUES
Grounding is a form of somatic therapy that helps you center and anchor yourself to the present moment. This helps you take your mind off past events that are causing you distress. Here are a few grounding techniques to try at home:
Run cold water over your hands.
Move your body in ways that feel most comfortable to you as you move, focus on how your body feels by a body scan.
Focus on your breathing while you control how you inhale and exhale. You can start by inhaling to the count of 4, holding for 3 seconds, and then exhaling for another count of 4.
Take shoes / socks off and plant your feet into the soil for a few minutes, noticing how your feet feel.
2. GIVE YOURSELF A MASSAGE (Face, Neck, Ears, Legs, Hands, Feet)
Touch- plays a vital role in our health, and studies show that both social connection and touch broadly shape biological responses and behaviors that impact our overall wellbeing. You may not be able to get a full body massage everyday, but you can practice self-massage on several of your body parts to help you relax.
FACE: use acupressure points on the face while applying your evening moisturizer. Using your thumb and index finger, start at your inner eyebrow and gently squeeze, moving along the eyebrow. Massage the temples either side of your head. Then give yourself a scalp massage.
LEGS: Massaging your legs from top to bottom can help to improve circulation, as well as contributing to feelings of relaxation in both body and mind. Starting from the top, massage your hips and thighs using the base of your hands for deeper pressure using long, fluid strokes. For your calf muscles, interlace your fingers across the shin and, using the heels of both hands either side of the head of the muscle, move up and down, squeezing each section.
3. DRINK SOME HERBAL TEA
Herbal teas have been a long-established way of bringing calm to daily life and are simple to bring into your everyday habits. Try drinking teas that include lemon balm, green tea, rose petals, lavender, passionflower, and chamomile
4. LISTEN TO FREQUENCY MUSIC & MEDITATE
A regular meditation practice has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, slow down the rate of brain aging and memory loss, promote mental health, and lengthen attention span. Healing music with 417 Hz solfeggio frequency will help you to remove negative energy and find inner balance. Combining these two practices at home can alleviate the “monkey mind” and allow you to focus on the soothing sounds while quieting the mind. Simply search hertz music on your favorite music app and focus your attention on the sounds while you sit quietly.
5. APPLY ACUPRESSURE TO YOUR EAR
A really powerful tool based on Traditional Chinese Medicine is auricular (ear) pressure using ear seeds. Certain points on the ear correlate to different organ systems within the body to transfer difficult emotions in the mind to being felt somatically in the body. The ‘Shenmen’ point is a good all-rounder point that provides really valuable in-the-moment relief. take a pair of tweezers and gently peel back the adhesive gauze that the ear seed is laid upon and gently place it, sticky side down, with the ear seed itself directly over the point. Use your thumb and forefinger on both sides of the ear to apply pressure to the ear seed and gauze to make sure it’s firmly in place. Then, a few times per day, apply pressure with your fingers in the same way, for three or four minutes.
6. GIVE YOURSELF A REIKI BATH
Reiki utilizes the power of healing hands, a method of using the palms of the hands to give energy healing to yourself and others. Run yourself a warm bath, put some soothing music on, light some candles and arrange some healing crystals (if you have them). Then give yourself a full-body self-reiki treatment, moving through the body’s seven chakras — starting at the crown, at the top of your head, and finishing with the root, at the base of your spine. Rest your palms on each energy center for around three minutes, using visualization techniques to imagine your body filling with healing, white light. And breathe. This will help soothe your body and ease your mind.
